Nearly 8,000 vehicles travel SR 203 in this location daily. The WSDOT National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System and State Waste Discharge Municipal Stormwater Permits require us to create and carry out a Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan to reduce pollution from state-owned or operated storm sewer systems. WSDOT needs to update highways, like this work on SR 203, that don’t have stormwater treatment systems.
Traditionally, the WSDOT managed stormwater runoff from highways to maintain safe driving conditions and preserve the condition of the roadway. The goal was to get the water off the roadway as fast as possible. While safety and preservation continue to be our top priorities, we also recognize that stormwater runoff from highways and other transportation facilities can contribute to water quality problems. The state has an interest in protecting and preserving natural resources and other environmental assets including ecosystem functions and beneficial uses of Washington State receiving waters. WSDOT stormwater management procedures and practices have changed over time to reflect these interests.
$1.68 million in state and federal funds.
This project will install vegetative filler strips at two locations on sides of northbound and southbound SR 203.
