Project overview
In fall 2023, contractor crews started construction to replace the damaged northern span of the Lind Avenue Southwest bridge over southbound Interstate 405 in Renton. The Lind Avenue overpass is now back open.
What to expect
To replace this span, several I-405 closures took place, mostly during overnight lane reductions on I-405.
The Lind Avenue overpass, just west of the SR 167/I-405 overpass, was damaged when several of its girders were struck by a backhoe that was being carried on a trailer on June 13, 2022. After the north span of the bridge was rebuilt in 2023-24, the overpass reopened May 29, 2024.
On June 13, 2022, a backhoe being towed on a trailer struck the Lind Avenue Southwest overpass over I-405, damaging five girders that support the bridge. We closed the four-lane bridge and engineers determined the supporting structures are compromised. The level and location of damage makes replacing the damaged girders difficult and not cost-effective. Engineers say the integrity of the structure is undermined without replacing the overpass.
During the weekend of Nov. 4-5, 2023, southbound I-405 was closed as contractor crews demolished the damaged north span of the overpass.
About 16,000 vehicles traveled across the bridge on any given day, including the Renton Fire Department, which has a fire station just south of the overpass. About 139,000 vehicles travel on I-405 each day.
The work was completed May 29, 2024.
