Project overview
In late 2023, contractor crews completed work to replace the existing damaged debris flow fence located in the vicinity of SR 14 between mileposts 25.35 - 25.45, near Cape Horn in Skamania County.
During rockfall activity, the debris fence helps to contain rocks and debris by holding it between the fence and the slope, reducing the amount of rocks and debris that fall onto the road and into the travel lanes of the highway, which improve safety and reduces emergency road closures. Additionally, to increase soil stability, the side slopes of the debris fence chute was stabilized with TECCO mesh, which is a mesh fencing made of steel.
In late 2023, contractor crews completed work to replace the existing damaged debris flow fence in the vicinity of SR 14 at milepost 25.39, near Cape Horn.
Due to the wet climate and the mountainous terrain, several slopes along SR 14 experience rock fall activity, which can force the emergency closure of the highway until maintenance crews can clear rocks and debris. To reduce the potential for these emergency highway closures, contractor crews will repair the debris fence along the roadside. The debris fence works to reduce the amount of rock and debris that falls onto the roadway and into the travel lanes, improving safety for all travelers.
This stretch of highway sees about 5,300 vehicles a day, with 14.2% of those being freight trucks.
