SR 26 and First Avenue intersection - Safety Improvement

Project overview

The project will install a compact roundabout at the intersections of SR 26 and First Avenue. The I2 crash prevention program for systemic treatment at intersection selected this location for a compact roundabout due to existing crash patterns.

Timeline
June 2025-October 2025.

What to expect

Construction started Aug. 4 and is scheduled to be complete in October.

Travelers on SR 26 and First Avenue will encounter temporary signals, one-way alternating traffic, and detour routes for side streets. Traffic may also be controlled with flaggers.

The map shows the area near intersection in Othello, Wash., of SR 26 and First Avenue, where a new roundabout will be built in 2025.

In 2019 a Transportation Study was performed by WSDOT and Perteet to identify improvements to the SR 26 highway system near Othello, WA. At the intersection of SR 26 and First Avenue, it was determined that a roundabout was the preferred alternative to increase safety and reduce congestion. The study received input from community members and from local community partners including The City of Othello, Adams County, Othello School District, Washington State Patrol and the Othello Chamber of Commerce.

This roundabout will increase the safety of this intersection along with mobility. A roundabout will allow all turning movements at this intersection, meaning that westbound trucks along SR 26 will have the ability to take a left on to the SR 24 spur instead of following the existing truck route through Othello. The current configuration has many turning constraints that limit the mobility of this intersection. This project will partner with local community partners and follow the City of Othello's Active Transportation Plan.
