Planning study news
The pre-design study of the intersection of SR 112 at Weel Road and Eagle Crest Way is complete and the recommended concept can be viewed in the Outcomes tab of this study webpage. In June and July 2023, WSDOT conducted a virtual stakeholder committee meeting and community engagement to review and provide feedback on the proposed Complete Streets concept for the intersection.
Purpose
State Route 112 at Weel Road and Eagle Crest Way is just south of Clallam Bay. This study will make recommendations for improvements at the intersection. The study will engage local stakeholders and the community to identify these improvements. Recommendations made as a result of this study will become part of the fish barrier removal project at the intersection scheduled to begin summer 2025.
State Route 112 is an important roadway for the west end of the Olympic Peninsula. It is the only way to access Neah Bay and the Makah Indian Reservation.
This highway is also important for freight serving the local industries. The annual average daily traffic volume is 2,000, 20 percent of which are trucks. The speed limit is 25 MPH.
The upcoming fish barrier removal and replacement project at this location provides an opportunity to make improvements to the intersection that will better serve all users.
This intersection is next to the Clallam Fire Department and serves as the access road to Washington State’s Clallam Bay Correction Center. Clallam Transit Route 16 has a “flag” stop on each side of the intersection. This means a person can hail the bus at this location, but it is not a required stop.
WSDOT completed an in-depth review and pre-design study. The study included analysis of traffic patterns and a review of intersection collisions to help identify improvements for drivers and non-motorized users. Following the analysis results, the existing configuration of the intersection will remain with the addition of improvements for active transportation users.
