US 12/Old Highway 9 Roundabout Pre-design Study

Target Zero is WSDOT’s safety improvement program. It aims to reduce serious and fatal crashes on state highways. The program focuses on two aspects: crash reduction and crash prevention.
Studies show that roundabouts are safer than traffic signals or stop signs. They accommodate vehicles of various sizes and types, including:

• Emergency vehicles
• Buses
• Bicycles
• Semi-trucks with trailers
• Farm equipment
• Logging equipment

Every year, WSDOT reviews rural state highway intersections for safety. WSDOT look for locations that are at the highest risk for severe crashes. We then develop a plan to reduce crash potential at those intersections.
